Sample Preparation

Electron Microprobe Analysis

We are currently equipped to handle standard geological thin sections (27mm x 46mm) and 25mm or 32mm round epoxy mounts. All samples must be polished, flat, and have a clean surface.

Most samples will need to be coated with a thin layer of conductive material (typically carbon) before being placed into the electron microprobe and electron microscope instruments in order to avoid any accumulation of charge. Other coatings may be available please contact us at the lab to further discuss this possibility.

Samples should be dropped off to the EPMA Laboratory at least 48 hours before your scheduled appointment to be coated by our staff in time for your analytical session.
