A unique instrument: The only field-emission microprobe available at a Canadian University.
Up and running: All wires are connected and the new JEOL JXA-8530F microprobe is ready to go.
Element mapping using WDS: High-resolution mapping shows variation of elements within a sample and/or zoning within minerals.
Imaging: Backscattered and Secondary Electron Imaging available
Cathodoluminescence: See mineral zoning not apparent with other techniques.
Welcome to the Earth and Planetary Materials Analysis (EPMA) Laboratory
The core of this facility is a JEOL JXA-8530F field-emission electron microprobe installed in the summer of 2013, the first of its kind in Canada. Auxiliary equipment includes a suite of petrographic microscopes and sample preparation equipment.
We gratefully acknowledge the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Ontario Research Fund and Western's Academic Development Fund for their support in establishing this laboratory.
